An excellent flyer, the swift can reach speeds of 200 km/h over short distances and spends its entire life in the air (10 months/year). It is only found on land by accident and, of course, in summer in crevices of all kinds in order to brood there.
Its speed makes it one of the fastest animals. Extremely precise, it is capable of reaching its nest via a small orifice a few centimeters in diameter, apparently without reducing its speed.
It has been determined that black swifts can fly for 10 entire months without landing once. This makes it the bird with the record for the longest uninterrupted flight recorded by ornithologists.
Since the swift nests in colonies, it is necessary to install several nest boxes at the same time for successful nesting.
The sites may not be occupied for the first two years, don’t be discouraged! A couple must settle in to attract the rest of the colony.
